Prefix Registration

A flock prefix is a name by which an individual flock is known. It is unique to each flock. The RFBS maintains a database of flock prefixes to ensure that there is no duplication. If you have flocks of both Ryeland and Coloured Ryeland sheep, the prefixes for them must be different.

A one off payment of £10 per prefix is required upon registration of the flock.

Bankers Order forms are available on request – please submit your request through the form on the Contact Us page.

Registrations Basics

Following the adoption of  new Society Articles in 2010 the rules governing registration were also amended to cover the introduction of a new Coloured Ryeland Flock Book.

Registration of sheep in the Ryeland Flock Book:

Only Ryeland sheep meeting the breed standard having a white fleece born to parents previously registered in the main section of the Ryeland Flock Book may be considered for registration in the main section of the Ryeland Flock Book.

Registration of coloured sheep born ”accidentally” to white fleeced parents registered in the main section of the Ryeland Flock Book can be registered in the Supplementary Register of the Ryeland Flock Book

Registration of sheep in the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book:

Only Coloured Ryeland sheep meeting the breed standard, having a coloured fleece and born to parents both having a coloured fleece either previously registered in the supplementary section of the Ryeland Flock Book, the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book, the supplementary section of the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book or any combination of the above, may be considered for registration in the main section of the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book.

The mating of  Ryelands (white fleeced) with Coloured Ryelands is not encouraged by the Society . However any sheep born as a result of mixed mating (regardless of the fleece colour of said sheep) between a Ryeland sheep previously registered in the main section of the Ryeland Flock Book and a Coloured Ryeland sheep, registered, either in the supplementary section of the Ryeland Flock Book, the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book, the supplementary section of the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book or any combination may be considered for registration in the supplementary section of the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book.

A flow chart diagram has been created to help explain the registration rules

Tagging requirements.

All registered animals must be tagged by the owner in accordance with current Defra regulations for "tagging of sheep" and also the Society identification requirements. The Society requires that tags must have the Society Flock Number (issued to members on joining the RFBS) together with the Year letter and individual number, but not necessarily together on the tag. The individual number can be the individual number as used to meet the Defra regulations. Male and female lambs must not be tagged with the same individual number.

• Any animal entered in the main section of the Ryeland Flock Book must have the Ryeland flock number on the tag eg 02345

•Any animal entered in the Supplementary Ryeland Register must have the Ryeland flock number on the tag preceded by "S" for supplementary eg S02345.

•Any animal entered in the Coloured Ryeland Flock Book must have the Coloured Ryeland flock  number on the tag followed by "C" for coloured eg 0567C.

•Any animal entered in the Supplementary Coloured Ryeland Register must have the Coloured Ryeland flock number on the tag preceded by "S" for supplementary and followed by "C" for coloured eg S0567C

Naming Ram Lambs

Example: The letter for 2015 is V and rams should given an appropriate name preceded by the Ryeland Flock Book Society Flock Number eg. Redgrove Victory . The RFBS does not record names for females.

Additional flock prefixes.

Members wishing to register sheep against additional flock prefixes will be required to pay an annual fee of £15 for each additional flock prefix. Such fees are to be paid yearly with annual membership subscriptions. This is subject to any additional flock prefixes being registered in the same name as the initial prefix. Otherwise separate membership will be required. Different prefixes are required for sheep bred by one member that are registered in the Ryeland flock book and Coloured Ryeland flock book and for any other flock owned by the same member.

Additional Flock Numbers

For each additional prefix  registered, a flock number will be allocated to be used in conjunction with it.

Supplementary Registers

Members wishing to register sheep in a supplementary register of the Ryeland or Coloured Ryeland Flock Book must pay an annual £5 fee for each supplement payable on first use of the supplementary register each year.
